Kate Middleton had her head in the game during the Royal Charity Polo Cup in Windsor, England on Friday. Just one day before she received a standing ovation at Wimbledon, the Princess of Wales made a last-minute save at the polo fundraiser as the winning trophy slipped from a player’s hands.

On July 10, Prince William joined a few professional polo players on the field to raise money for several charities, including Wales Air Ambulance, The Royal College of Paramedics, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Maternal Mental Health Alliance, and more. Following the match, William and Kate joined a few of the professional athletes for a photo opp alongside the DMMI Royal Charity Polo Cup.

In preparation for the photo, one of the players reached for the cup, which wobbled on its base, threatening to slip from their grasp and land at Kate’s feet. Luckily, the player was able to regain their grasp on the trophy. In footage captured by Hello!, Kate swooped in to put her hand under the trophy just as the player recovered his balance. While the moment happened quickly Kate’s split-second decision ultimately helped the group avoid any incident.

Though initially caught off guard, the Princess of Wales—dressed in a black-and-white gingham dress—and William quickly laughed off the slightly awkward moment, returning their attention to the cameras seconds later. The royals also enjoyed a cuddly PDA moment on the polo field the same day, walking shoulder-to-shoulder as they smiled and laughed.

In an Instagram post celebrating the fundraiser’s 15th anniversary, William and Kate revealed that the tournament raised over £1 million, or $1.3 million this year. Collectively, the tournament has helped raise £15 million, over $20 million, for various charities over the past decade and a half.

A day after the polo fundraiser, Kate made a stylish return to Wimbledon—her first time attending the tournament since her cancer diagnosis in March 2024—in a symbolic red dress. The Princess of Wales is expected to make more public appearances later this summer, including at several charity events.
