Local county reports spike in chlamydia cases, urges testing

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) — The Dearborn County Health Department is urging residents to get tested after reporting a sharp increase in chlamydia cases this year.

According to a public health announcement issued by Health Officer Dr. Stephen Eliason, the county has confirmed 37 cases of chlamydia so far in 2026, compared with 28 total cases reported during all of 2025.

Health officials are encouraging anyone who is sexually active, has unprotected sex or is not in a mutually monogamous relationship to schedule a screening.

The department noted that chlamydia often causes no symptoms, making routine testing the most reliable way to detect the infection early.

Left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious health complications, including chronic pelvic pain, pregnancy complications, persistent infections and infertility, according to the health department.

Officials said the infection is typically treated effectively with antibiotics.

The Dearborn County Health Department is offering free, confidential testing. Residents can schedule a screening by calling 812-537-8844.
