Singer Brandy Shares Emotional Response To Body-Shaming In New Instagram Post

Amid the internet chatter about Brandy’s health and body image following her recent appearances, the singer took to social media to seemingly address the noise.
Brandy, born Brandy Norwood, shared an emotional Instagram post on July 11, calling on fans to be “gentler” with one another. She added that “everyone is carrying a story we cannot see.”

“I’ve learned that it takes only a moment to form an opinion about someone’s appearance, and a lifetime to understand what they’ve lived through,” the Grammy-winning singer and actress wrote in the emotional post. “Our words have weight. Our judgments have weight. Our kindness does too.”
Fans have been speculating about the star’s health after recent photos from an early July visit to her hometown of McComb, Mississippi circulated on the internet. Brandy, 47, had been in the area to host a community celebration, according to local NBC News affiliate WLBT. While there, she was presented a key from Pike County, the affiliate said.
Brandy wrote in her Instagram post that, perhaps, people have been looking for beauty in “bodies that never change and faces that never age.”
“But life was never meant to leave us untouched. It shapes us. It humbles us. It refines us,” the singer wrote in the post. “Every season leaves its signature upon us. And maybe that’s where beauty has been all along. Not in escaping change, but in becoming through it.”
In the Instagram post, the singer shared that she had stopped looking to her appearance as a measure of self-worth, adding that the outlook has been freeing. She also challenged fans to think twice before passing judgment.
“If this post leaves you with anything, I hope it’s this:Before you speak about someone’s body, before you speak about someone’s face, before you decide who they are by what you see, remember, you are looking at someone’s child. Someone’s friend. Someone’s dream. Someone’s life. A soul,” Brandy said in the post. “And souls have always been more beautiful than surfaces.”
The singer joins many other celebrities who’ve cautioned against commenting on body image. In a December 2024 interview, Ariana Grande slammed society’s comfort with discussing people’s appearance.
“There’s a comfortability that people have commenting on that that I think is really dangerous,” Grande said. “I think that I’m really lucky to have the support system that I have to just know and trust that I’m beautiful. But I do know what the pressure of that noise feels like. It’s been a resident in my life since I was 17 and I just don’t invite it in anymore. It’s not welcome.”
Billie Eilish has also addressed discussions around her body, telling Vogue in a 2023 interview that hearing comments about her appearance continues to be painful.
“I like myself more than I used to, and I’m more interested in how I feel than how they feel. But then also that might be a load of bulls— because it still hurts my feelings,” she said.
